A little over a year ago I had the amazing opportunity to be the inaugural Artist in Residence at the idea garden in Kingston, NY. It was a profound experience.
The world had changed due to a global pandemic and yet, painfully, had not changed that much at all. We saw how greed, power, racism, and violence still plays a major part of our daily lives. The residency at the idea garden was a safe space to work through deep personal and historical hurts.
The work made during the residency explores personal and collective history, and the processing of pain, joy, and societal relationships.
What does it mean to arrive at a new location, a new destination, a new state of being, a new awareness?
Referencing the idea of coming into deeper realizations, personally and historically, the pieces exam what it means to be a black, female, Caribbean born immigrant and touches upon the themes of colonialism, immigration, home, community and spirituality.
The photos and videos below document some of my creative journey.
